So maybe Lightyear isnвЂ™t the kind of movie thatВ Hollywood would have made in 1995. SheВ bounced upВ and down in her seat,В repeated theВ dialogue back to the screen in a soft voice, andВ cheered all the big heroic moments.В During a crucial scene late in the film, she whispered вЂњDonвЂ™t do it Buzz!вЂќ with such intensity I was terrified Buzz would do it and break this poor kidвЂ™s heart forever. I stayed because it quickly became clear that this girl was loving the film, and seeing it through her eyes was a special thing to behold.В She was invested in this story in the way only a kid can be invested in a story. For a minute or two, I thought aboutВ movingВ to a less crowded part of the theater. This mom and daughter didnвЂ™t even leave me a buffer seat. At first I was annoyed because IвЂ™m a germaphobic weirdo and I like toВ keep a little space around me at the theater these days if at all possible. And the longer BuzzВ tries to successfully achieve hyperspeed, the more the other survivors grow accustomed to their new home, andВ Alisha andВ BuzzвЂ™ other friends move on with their lives.ДЄs that description suggests, beneath LightyearвЂ™sВ upbeatВ sci-fi surface lies the melancholic heart of a Pixar movie. But each crystal test dilates time, meaning a flight thatВ passes inВ minutes to Buzz actually takes years to complete. Both skills come in handy in Lightyear.Д«laming himself for the missionвЂ™s failure, BuzzВ fixates on finding a way to build and test a special crystal that will power their shipвЂ™s hyperdriveВ andВ enable the stranded crew to make their way home. In the Captain AmericaВ and Avengers movies, Evans proved particularlyВ adept atВ playing the vulnerabilityВ masked by Steve RogersвЂ™ puffed-up physique, and at bringing out the emotionalВ shadings of a rigid do-gooder. The local wildlife proves hostile,В and in trying to blast off again, Buzz accidentally crashes their rocket, marooning himself and hundreds of colonistsВ amidst dangerousВ alien terrain.Д®vans was a smart choice to play this version of Buzz.В He has to evoke Tim AllenвЂ™s beat cop in space energy from Toy Story without mimicking it AllenвЂ™s bombastic Buzz just wouldnвЂ™t work in a story thatВ treats him as a fallibleВ human rather than an oblivious piece of plastic. As LightyearВ opens, Buzz ( Chris Evans)В and his Space Ranger partnerВ Alisha (Uzo Aduba) land their ship on a faraway planet. ItвЂ™s 100 minutes to us toВ the characters in the filmВ itвЂ™s a lot longer.
